Name    Robin Davie
Born    November 2nd 1951 – St Agnes, Cornwall, UK
Domicile    Cleveland Ohio, USA
Country of entry    United Kingdom

Robin Davie has sea in his blood. He grew up on the beaches of Cornwall and followed the Sunday Times Golden Globe race in 1968, thinking “I’ll do that one day”. After serving in the British Merchant Navy for 20 years, Davie competed against Don McIntyre in Class 2 of the 1990 BOC Challenge Around Alone Race, going on to make his second and third solo circumnavigations in the 1994 and 1998 BOC races.
During the 1994 race he was dismasted thousands of miles from Cape Horn and sailed under jury rig around the Cape to the Falkland Islands.
His first circumnavigation was in a yacht named Spirit of Cornwall and will represent this county of birth again during this Race. Since his last circumnavigation, Robin has remained in the USA speaking professionally about his experiences. He returned to Britain in 2017, bought a Rustler 36 and began preparing in earnest. Robin remains passionate about the Golden Globe Race. The first event back in 1968/9 inspired him to take up solo sailing, and to compete in the 50th Anniversary edition seems, he says to be a fitting retirement plan.
Robin says of the GGR: “Having done 3 solo circumnavigations with stops, Don’s Golden Globe Race reignited the passion, and presented a rare opportunity to finally complete my original dream of sailing around the world solo without stops.”

Robin Davie bought his Rustler 36 in Benfleet, Essex and sailed west to Falmouth to refit himself close to Rustler Yacht’s yard where she was built for home completion. “Nothing was ever quite finished, and the more I looked, the more I found needed working on or replacing” he says. Davie has re-glassed the hull and deck joint, extended the chain plates, replaced the mast step and constructed a solid doghouse to protect the cockpit area. He planned to re-launch her in March and cross the English Channel to Les Sables d’Olonne to fit a new mast taken from Jean-Luc Van Den Heede’s rival Rustler 36 Matmut then devote the last three months before the start to completing sea trials.
